Salt lake Volunteer Council-Life Care

Salt lake Volunteer Council-Life Care

a non-profit organization  working to improve the quality of independent living of  individuals with disabilities and the elderly through yard work, house maintenance and food deliveries through the Salt Lake Food Bank.
  Our Work:
-assisting the elderly and individuals with disabilities to maintain independent and healthy lifestyles through assistance with food deliveries and landscape maintenance.
Hours: 3,000 + logged student hours
     
National Ability Center

National Ability Center

The National Ability Center is committed to the development of lifetime skills for people of all ages and abilities by providing affordable outdoor sports and recreational experiences in a nurturing environment.
 

Our Work:
-volunteer with ski events and equestrian events
-students help to maintain adaptive bikes with their mechanic knowledge.
-assist with care of grounds and horse stables
-set-up and break down assistance given to fundraising events
Hours: 800 student hours

     
The Peace House

the Peace House

-a non-profit emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. The Peace House offers fresh start training courses to offer single mothers opportunity for a successful family and life.

  Our Work:
-holiday helpers-collect, organize and deliver gifts and essentials for families in need through the holiday helpers program
-raise money to help families in need of basic necessities for the winter
Hours: 1,200 student hours
     

Mountain Lands Community Housing Trust

Mountain Lands Community Housing Trust

“Housing for People, not for Profit.”
Mountain Lands Community Housing Trust works to preserve, promote and expand housing opportunities for lower-income households in Summit County.  Founded in 1993, MCHT is based on the belief that housing is a basic building block of stable families and communities.

  Our Work:
-participation includes but is not limited to: framing, concrete foundation preparation, and finishing work.
-students work side by side with Shawn West, the General Contractor as well as the families working on their future homes as a community effort.
Hours: 1,500 student/staff hours

Empty Bowls Project

Empty Bowls Project

Empty Bowls is a project to help provide support for food banks, soup kitchens and other food banks that fight hunger. Students design and make the bowls for the project and then provided different soups to raise money for various services.
  Our Work:
-Over a period of ten weeks the students created 128 bowls
-through the integration of their artistic ability and the involvement of the Oakley community the students raised $980.00 that was distributed to The Kids Café and The Heifer Project.

Hours: 900 hours

Center for Women and Children

Volunteers of America

The Center for Women and Children provides a supportive environment that promotes dignity, respect, and self-determination.  It allows for a supportive environment while overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction.
  Our Work:
-Students baked for seasonal holidays
-Students spent time playing games and interacting with the women and children
-take part in group discussions with women at center
Hours: 1,000 hours
     
The Wentworth

An assisted living center located in Oakley, Utah for the elderly.  Providing assistance, housing and sustainable living.
  Our work:
-Students put together activities such as bingo
-Students played music and performed in the choir
-Students spent time socializing and interacting with the residents

Courage Reins

Courage Reins

The Mission at Courage Reins is to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Through therapeutic horseback riding and other equine based activities, they provide a safe, fun, and challenging setting for physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

  Our Work:
Courage Reins
The Oakley School aids in everything from helping with lessons to ensuring the chores at the barn are completed.  Sometimes this includes grooming horses, cleaning tack, feeding horses, cleaning stalls, or the barn in general. All modules volunteer for either one or two module days, usually averaging six hours a day for a six or seven week span.
Hours: 1,500+ hours of student/staff participation
     
Recycle Park City   Our Work:
-assist with sorting recyclables and help with organization of community center
-educate visitors and give tours of the facility to newcomers
-complete most of the “dirty work” involved with running a successful community recycle center
Hours: 2,000 hours

Kamas Ranger District
  Our Work:
-trail building and obscuring trails in re-vegetation areas
-building fences with non-indigenous juniper trees
-building water bars and other erosion control devices
Hours: 1,500 hours
     
Bureau of Land Management - Moab Field Office
BLM
  Our Work:
-The student body, teachers, house coaching staff and therapists participated in a four-day trail and campground restoration project in the Moab Valley.
-This is the largest community service project The Oakley School has completed and we look forward to another rewarding year next spring.

Utah Rivers Council
The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was created to help preserve our rivers from being dammed, channelized and over-developed. Congress passed this act in 1968. The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act doesn't preserve the rivers as a national park. The idea is not to halt development or use of the river but to preserve the character of a river.
 

Our work:
Students enrolled in kayaing, rafting or river ecology courses volunteered in river clean-up, the annual paddling festival and spring gear swap fundraiser.

Mountain Trails  

FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Mountain Trails Foundation is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of trail access for all non-motorized users.

Our objectives are to promote, preserve, advocate and maintain local trails. The Foundation works with Federal, State and local government and with private property owners to achieve trail connections and to preserve access into and through developments. Our involvement has resulted in a system of 300+ miles of purpose built trails on public and private lands.

Best friends Animal Sanctuary

Best Friends

The mission of Best Friends is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness to animals helps build a better world for all of us.

And the work of Best Friends is supported entirely through the donations of our members and supporters.  The animal society operates the nations largest sanctuary for homeless pets, provides adoption, spay/neuter, educational programs and publishes Best Friends, the nations largest all good news animal magazine.

 

Volunteer efforts at BFAS include:  assisting staff with daily cleaning and socializing of animals and their homes.  We have also helped build miles of trails dogs and their prospective humans are able to use year round.

Furburbia
Our purpose is to protect and provide for animals while fostering an awareness of their importance in our lives.
  Our work:
-volunteer for pet adoption storefront in Park City
-Jobs include: walking dogs, grooming dogs and cats and assist in animal social behavior improvements for successful adoption.
-volunteer twice annually for the Pet Superadoption

Trip to the Heifer Ranch in Arkansas:

Kid's Cafe
Kid's Cafe (a division of the Utah Food Bank)
 

This organization provides three dinners each week for hundreds of at-risk children at more than a dozen low-income areas throughout Utah.

Students raise money to donate to the local chapter of the Kid’s Café.

These fundraisers occur throughout the year from our ceramic arts program to bake sales.
