How Oakley Helps Students Succeed in Math

Have you ever seen how far a Barbie can bungee jump? Well maybe if you had, you’d really be able to grasp linear functions. At Oakley we utilize new and fun methods to really help students understand difficult math concepts.

Trust me, it works.

The trick is ensuring that learning is based on respect. When teachers have good boundaries and show respect for their classroom, the students quickly follow suit. When there is a foundation of respect, it is easy to engage students in amusing activities and still follow structured learning modules.

We’ve found that hands-on learning, like the Bungee Barbie exercise, work for the college-bound student body at Oakley. With this particular method, we increase the number of rubber bands that suspend the Barbie in the air, which increases how far our Barbie travels. Students track these increases and therefore track linear regression!

Silly? Most definitely. Effective? Always. This is just one example of engaging math lessons that leave lasting impressions on our students.

When you tour Oakley you will meet the faculty and see our teachers at work, so come visit soon and bring your Barbie.
