Experiential Education

Oakley School’s experiential education program sets the industry standard among residential programs. Every weekend, our students participate in five-week-long modules, which are immersive, experiential activities that fall into one of three categories: physical activity, fine arts, or healthy living. Many of these modules reconnect students to their experience in wilderness and reinforce the therapeutic value of time spent outdoors.

Modules include a wide array of activities, such as fly fishing, skiing, snowboarding, ceramics, photography, outdoor cooking, organic gardening, white water rafting, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Whether they are developing a new passion or rebuilding confidence in an old favorite, our students’ involvement in modules gives them continued real life experience and provides skills they can take with them to college and beyond.

We offer a choice of up to ten different options each five-week block. Each module includes an emphasis on incorporating community service into its syllabus. Students are asked to participate in at least one fine arts course, one healthy living course, and one outdoor education course. After fulfilling these requirements, students are free to explore and enjoy the many choices available to them each session.

Outdoor Education

Our outdoor education options include kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, river ecology and fly-fishing during the spring, summer and fall. The majority of our student body takes advantage of “the greatest snow on Earth” through alpine, and Nordic skiing, as well as snowboarding and snowshoeing during the winter season.

Fine Arts

Our fine arts options include ceramics, sculpture, photography, printmaking, furniture making, 3D design, and drawing and painting. Students spend time on campus in our art studios, but they are also out on snowshoes with their cameras taking pictures, visiting Salt Lake City to tour museums, attending art shows, and taking part in fundraising and community involvement through the arts.
Oakley School recognizes everyone has perspectives to share and lessons to learn through the medium of art. Knowledge, tolerance, and respect for life are some of the welcome traits of someone who loves the arts. Students find healthy methods of self-expression while developing their gifts and sharing their talents.

We offer art courses each quarter and in module blocks ranging from introductory to advanced courses. Some examples of courses we have offered in the past include:

Black & White Photography
Ceramics
Charcoal and Pastel
Color Theory
Drawing
Film Studies
Print Making
Sculpting
Water Color and Oil Painting

Healthy Living

Healthy living modules cover a wide array of interests, hobbies, and activities. Students may practice yoga or meditation techniques, or they might spend their weekends working in our organic garden on campus.

The healthy living modules broaden students’ ideas of interests and activities that will contribute to a healthy and well-balanced life style after Oakley.

In these modules, students learn the importance of giving back to the community and how developing an ability to express gratitude can greatly increase their quality of life.

Community Service

Oakley believes that community service is an important part of each of our students’ growth and journey here at the school, and as such, we require each module to incorporate at least five hours of time dedicated to service. Different service opportunities include everything from volunteering at a local elementary school to helping out at the National Ability Center in Park City. In 2014, our students took their community service passions to Ghana, Africa, where they volunteered with young students at a school.

Each module is designed to integrate service relevant to the course material of the module, and students are able to track their community service hours for college and job applications post-Oakley.
