Alumni Services
Transition is a stressful and exciting time in the journey of a family at The Oakley School. In order to assist families, we provide an Alumni Services Program. It is our goal to help families plan effectively, gain knowledge of the transition process, as well as provide continued support.
During the last three months of a families stay at The Oakley School, families participate in a detailed transition planning process. Employment plans, living arrangements, educational plans, and home contracts will be developed. In addition, families will begin developing resources and support systems in the home environment. Also during this time, students participate in transition themed group therapy in order to focus attention and energy on the upcoming changes.
Upon completion of the Oakley School, families are provided with continuing education. This is offered in a group format with topics dictated by The Oakley School along with input from transitioning families. The aim of these groups is to provide families with knowledge and skills to aid in a smooth transition to home, all while providing an atmosphere of support and connection. Topics covered will assist families in understanding and coping with the challenges presented in transition.
Through our experience, we have found that the first three months post discharge can be the most difficult for our transitioning families. During this period, we provide continued support from the families’ primary therapist as well as the Alumni Coordinator. We encourage families to continue to use The Oakley School as a resource and source of support.
